Claiming a Provident Fund

In November 2017 Ekuvukeni Advice Office helped a client to claim his provident fund of R 150 000. The 64-year-old man had first come to the office in February 2016. Mrs Ngcobo (right) contacted the Metal Industries Benefit Funds Administrators (MIBFA), which confirmed that he was entitled to claim. She informed the man about the requirements and helped him to submit the forms.

There was a delay because the man was working for another company that contributed to the same provident fund that he wished to claim from. The fund said that the man had to first stop working and retire, and then the fund would pay him. Mrs Ngcobo passed this information to the client. Since he was 64 and was planning to retire soon anyway, he decided to retire in 2017 in order to speed up his application. Once he had done so, the fund processed his application quickly and he was paid the sum of R 150 000 in November 2017.

When Mrs Ngcobo asked him how he planned to use the money, he said that he intended to pay for his grandchildren to go to school.
