New Hanover paralegal Zandile Khanyile (seated) with the local magistrate. The office is based at the court and works closely with it.

The office works daily with other service providers, mainly the New Hanover Magistrate’s Court, where it is located, and the local police. The advice office manages all applications for protection orders for the court, while the police refer many cases of domestic violence where a person wants counselling, advice or help with mediations or a protection order.

In 2021, our partners referred 73 cases to the office, while the office referred 515 clients to them – mainly the magistrate court for protection orders and the local police to open a case. Staff followed up referrals by monitoring of the cases to ensure that clients receive the best service possible.

The office also works with social workers at The Department of Social Development, and traditional leaders. We refer cases to them where we are unable to solve clients’ problems on our own, and receive many clients referred to us. Where there are disputes between neighbours over property boundaries, grazing animals and other matters, we ask the traditional leaders for help to resolve these issues if we can’t solve them.

We communicate with provident and pension funds for clients who apply to them. We also work with the local NGO Inqola Kanoah, which supports orphans by giving them food parcels before and after school.
