Obtaining a Provident Fund for a Former Employee

A 66-year-old unemployed man came to the office in April 2016. He had been employed by Hard Work Africa for seven years and again at Metal and Engineering for a number of years. He had contributed to the provident fund but hadn’t claimed his contributions. He couldn’t afford a lawyer and wanted assistance.

The advice office telephoned the Metal Industries Benefit Funds Administrators (MIBFA), which confirmed that the client had unclaimed funds. The fund emailed the claim forms to the advice office. The office called the client when the forms arrived and he collected them. Paralegal Thabile Madondo (right) advised him to ask his bank to fill in the forms, put their bank stamp and provide a bank statement. She also advised him to go to SARS to get his tax number. He collected these documents, brought them to the advice office and Mrs Madondo posted them to MIBFA.

In June the client received his unclaimed benefits of R 33 566. He has several children and grandchildren and there were seven beneficiaries to this payment.
